Forum: GratefulDead Subject: What are your favorite song quotes?

Everyday we walk around with a Dead song in our heads, helping us to get through the day. Nothing like a little Sugaree when you are out working in the rain, Fire on the Mountain when you are biking, Candyman when you are in a meeting, Ripple when you are thinking of Jerry.

What are some of your favorite song quotes? The quotes you write in birthday cards to friends, as your screen saver marque on your computer, the ones on the bumper stickers of your car. There seems to be so many poignant one liners in their songs that we apply to life on a daily basis. It always brings a smile when we can pull one of those out during the day.

Such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be there...

While The Music Played the Band

"They're a band beyond description
Like Jehovah's favorite choir.
People joinin' hand in hand
While the music plays the band.
Lord, they're setting us on fire."

But the heat came round and busted me for smilin on a cloudy day.

"Spanish lady come to me, she lays on me this rose.
It rainbow spirals round and round,
It trembles and explodes
It left a smoking crater of my mind,
I like to blow away.
But the heat came round and busted me
For smilin on a cloudy day"

Oh and about 10,000 more lines ;)

I know that the life I'm livin's no good

All the years combine they melt into a dream

You tell me this town ain't got no heart

I'm still walking, so I'm sure that I can dance

The grass ain't greener, the wine ain't sweeter either side of the hill

Lost my boots in transit

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Blow the horn and tap the tambourine

Mama, mama many worlds I've come since I first left home

Sleep in the stars, don't you cry, dry your eyes on the wind

We're a happy family
We're a happy family
Me mom and daddy

Sitting here in queens
Eating refried beans
We're in all magazines
Gulpin' down thorazines

We ain't got no friends
Our troubles never end
No christmas cards to send
Daddy likes men

Daddy's telling lies
Baby's eating flies
Mommy's on pills
Baby's got the chills

I'm friends with the president
I'm friends with the pope
We're all making a fortune
Selling daddy's dope

Watch out now, take care
Beware of falling swingers
Dropping all around you
The pain that often mingles
In your fingertips
Beware of darkness

Watch out now, take care
Beware of the thoughts that linger
Winding up inside your head
The hopelessness around you
In the dead of night

Beware of sadness
It can hit you
It can hurt you
Make you sore and what is more
That is not what you are here for

Watch out now, take care
Beware of soft shoe shufflers
Dancing down the sidewalks
As each unconscious sufferer
Wanders aimlessly
Beware of maya

Watch out now, take care
Beware of greedy leaders
They take you where you should not go
While weeping atlas cedars
They just want to grow, grow and grow
Beware of darkness (beware of darkness)

With each night so fully wretched
And its dawn so far from born
You slip so close to darkness
You could shake it by the horn
["Touch of Darkness," by Robert Hunter]
It could be an illusion, but I might as well try
Might as well try...
I had one of those flashes I had been there before
Been there before...
Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right
["Scarlet Begonias," by Robert Hunter]
From day to day
Just letting it ride
You get so far away
From how it feels inside
You can't let go
'Cause you're afraid to fall
But the day may come
When you can't feel at all

Went to see the captain, strangest I could find
Laid my proposition down, laid it on the line
I won't slave for beggar's pay, likewise gold and jewels
But I would slave to learn the way to sink your ship of fools

Chorus
Ship of fools on a cruel sea
Ship of fools sail away from me
It was later than I thought when I first believed you
But now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools

Saw your first ship sink and drown from rocking of the boat
And all that could not sink of swim were just left there to float
I won't leave you drifting down but whoa it makes me wild
With thirty years upon my head to have you call me child

[chorus]

The bottles stand as empty now, as they were filled before
Time there was and plenty, but from that cup no more
Though I could not caution all, I still might warn a few
Don't lend your hand to raise no flag atop no ship of fools

[chorus]

Can't help yourself, eh? I can't either! The ref to CCharlie above reminded me of these lines, which show again, as in China Cat, just how elegantly Hunter strings together words, sensical or not:

Say you'll come back when you can
Whenever your airplane happens to land
Maybe I'll be back here too
It all depends on what's with you

Hung up waitin for a windy day
Kite on ice since the first of February
Mama Bee saying that the wind might blow
But standin here I say I just don't know

New ones comin as the old ones go
Everything's movin here but much too slowly
Little bit quicker and we might have time
to say "how do you do?" before we're left behind

Hey everybody - let's not forget the first song from the first album:

See that girl, barefootin' along,
Whistlin' and singin', she's a carryin' on.
There's laughing in her eyes, dancing in her feet,
She's a neon-light diamond and she can live on the street.

Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.

Well everybody's dancin' in a ring around the sun
Nobody's finished, we ain't even begun.
So take off your shoes, child, and take off your hat.
Try on your wings and find out where it's at.

Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.

Take a vacation, fall out for a while,
Summer's comin' in, and it's goin' outa style
Well, lie down smokin', honey; have yourself a ball,
Cause your mother's down in Memphis, won't be back 'till the fall.

Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.

...If nothing else, the stuff that Hunter wrote did not have that forlorn lovesick crap that chicks always wet their drawers and hankies over. At the very least, there was a story and often a story worthy of interpretation. So many of the quotes fit together with a piece of the daily grind that makes adopting just a phrase for the day a soothing thing to do.

Brokedown motorcycle: "nailed a retread to my feet and prayed for better weather."

Bad cocktail party: "Please don't dominate the rap jack.."

Speed Trap: "Test me, Test me, why don't you arrest me."

My kid: "Take up your China Doll, just a nervous from the fall."

Motorcycle Ride: "I don't know what I'm going for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure."

Making lost connections: "operator, can you help me."

Nostalgia: "Dust off those rusty strings just one more time."

Dealing with the DMV: "Good morning Mister Benson, I see you're doing well, if I had me a shotgun..."

Legal Hassles in faraway places: "better get back to Tennessee, Jed."

Getting some strange; "I could tell without askin' she was into the blues."

....there's a line for almost any circumstance.
